Still a solid choice. Although I was (and still am) surprised that it rated so well last year. Decent flavor just not overly complex. Or am I just being contrarian??

I should also add that if youโ€™re sampling Mystic, they also have a Bourbon Liqueur that is rather wonderful. Donโ€™t skip it

This bourbon is fantastic. What a find here in the Triangle. The tour was also amazing.

Itโ€™s been a full year since we hunted the manticore and drew is venom from its bleeding corpse. Diluted with the antidote, my brother and I sell it at the tavern, 2 gold pieces a pour. Weโ€™ve been raking it in, our story embellishing slightly with every telling, all to hype up the famous โ€˜Manticorhattanโ€™ we sling from behind the bar. But weโ€™re running out. We could find a substitute, perhaps basilisk venom or even the piss if a phoenix (itโ€™s sterile my brother keeps reminding me). But no, nothing will match the woodsy firey smoothness that manticore venom provides. So an expedition then. We grab our gear once more, tell our friends and customers weโ€™re closed for a while. We step out into the cold pale sunlight of a winter dawn. A trail, an adventure, a quest, one that I am happy to repeat for as long as I can.

So glad this won last year so it appeared again this year. It really is an outstanding bourbon. And local too!

Nose is a little tight at first. Straw, then cherry, then brown sugar. Maybe some dusty peach. Hint of rose? Antique wicker. First sip similarly dusty, then caramel, then brown sugar. The oak is squeezing my tongue. The first sip opens up some citrus notes on the nose. Itโ€™s interesting, it feels like itโ€™s going to be thin on the start, but it has a pretty hefty body by the middle. I want to call this nose Hostess Fruit Pie. Something perfume-y in there too. Probably wouldโ€™ve called this rye if left to my own devices. I feel like I like it less the more I analyze it. Itโ€™s like buttery on the front and acerbic on the finish. Itโ€™s definitely got craft spirits vibes. Now I want to call the fruit note like tangerine pith. Iโ€™m going with a Gentlemanโ€™s 5.5 for the rating. Itโ€™s not bad, not great, kinda funky.

We're back! This Broken Oak has a bit more of a grain flavor than I remember, but still such a solid pour.

Aaand weโ€™re back!! This is delicious, just about everything one could ask for in a bourbon. And now Iโ€™ve also seen where & how itโ€™s made! Hereโ€™s to another fun calendar!

Delicious. Maybe I'm rounding up due to recency bias and a fun tour yesterday, but this bourbon is excellent. I guess good things can be produced in Durham.

Had a big hug but quite enjoyable caramel ending. Nice way to start off the season!

Such a good bourbon! Smooth, sweet and a little strong but I still enjoyed it as much as last year. Enjoying this with my brother-in-law who likes it but thinks it is a little astringent with a medicinal finish that lingers a little too long for his preference. Great start to the season. Merry Christmas!!

Sweeter and more baking spices than I remember, which leads to a muddied finish, but still delicious

Thereโ€™s something off putting on the nose that wasnโ€™t there last year. Yes, I washed my glassโ€ฆ

This bourbon is so good just straight out of the bottle. It's a fantastic, deliciously butterscotch hinting amazing drink. I'm so glad Mystic is in Durham, NC.

Smells like I stuck my face in a can of Hershey's cocoa powder. Craft-y, expressive, and heavy on the oak but no lumberyard. The palate is impressively round and oily but a little monotone and a bit light on the fadeout with that chocolate-heavy candy bar quality dominating.

Mystic Broken Oak By far one of my favorites of the year! Initial smell was rough. The taste was much sweeter but definitely not initially a favorite. After a few minutes the nose became much sweeter. Strong maple smell now. Vanilla. Pipe tobacco. Bitey taste. Each taste feels more familiar. Enjoyable to drink, couldnโ€™t tell you if this is super good or not, but Iโ€™m going to rate towards the middle of the pack as a standard. If I can change that later I probably will. I have very little frame of reference. Putting a small piece of ice is definitely what I like. I just don't love warm alcohol. I prefer cold liquid or even just poured over chipped ice. Iโ€™d definitely put this in my coffeeโ€ฆ or Dr. Pepper. So thatโ€™s good, right?
